With the help of the community, during the last 12 months, HOPE’S FRONT DOOR has helped over 5700 adults and children. Over the last two years, we have seen an increase of 12% in the number of children assisted through HOPE’S FRONT DOOR. We thank the community for helping families like Lisa’s.
HOPE’S FRONT DOOR really helps people in the community. I am a single mom and I go to dialysis five days a week. The gas voucher is really important to me with budget cuts for services, getting a van to the dialysis center is not always an option and sometimes the service is not reliable. I have been left stranded at centers before, so the HOPE’S FRONT DOOR fuel card is really key to me maintaining my health. Before I got sick , I was working two full-time jobs to provide for my children. I worked for the Woodridge School District 58 with their special needs program and I was a site director over three different locations for their before and after school program. After being independent, it wasn’t easy to ask for help, but at HOPE’S FRONT DOOR no one looks down on you or treat clients like they are beneath them because they need help.
I have a 13 year old at home with me. Last year for his birthday, I wanted to give him something so bad, but between the food and my medication, I just couldn’t. My son was so understanding about not getting anything for his birthday and tried to make me feel better. He said, “We are going to be okay, don’t worry.”
When I came to HOPE’S FRONT DOOR for a fuel card, they had a donated gift card from a local organization specifically to give out to children! He was so surprised he got something for his birthday! His face lit up like a Christmas tree! This year the food voucher from HOPE’S FRONT DOOR will be used for our Thanksgiving dinner. The food voucher will help me get things that I can’t get from the pantries and will make sure we have a nice little Thanksgiving.
I don’t take anything for granted and appreciate the help from the community. Knowing that people donate their time and money to HOPE’S FRONT DOOR makes me feel like I am not alone. It feels like people are rooting for me.
I am on the kidney transplant waiting list. I have faith that I will get a kidney soon to improve my health and then I can get back on my feet. I have dreams of helping other people like I have helped me. I want to open up a shop to pamper those with cancer and I would love to work with children again…I miss my “babies”!
I would like to tell the donors thanks for a having a big heart. If people didn’t reach out to help people get back on their feet, I am not sure what we would do.
